Mild Winter Brings Mold Growth Concerns

This year’s heavy fall rains and mild winter temperatures have produced an unseasonable need for mold prevention and detection.

We are not exactly having a heat wave, but temperatures have been well above normal. Mold spores would normally die off during a cold snap but in warmer weather, mold continues to grow and spread.

While most are thrilled with the mild temperatures, dreaded frost and snow in typical winter months prevent mold from circulating in the outside air.

While winter usually grants us with a temporary reprieve from mold growth due to lower levels outdoors, this year requires steps to keep mold at bay.

As always, we recommend that you keep cleaning around persistently moist areas like dampness around windows. Keeping the air circulating in bathrooms and tight spaces will also help. Reduce humidity in your home using a home dehumidifier.  Monitor with a humidity meter.

Not to sound like a broken record, but, warm winter or not, mold prevention is always about keeping spaces Clean and Dry!

  3. Hi,
Thanks for the effort you go through by posting these blog. Any ways I just want to ask if is there any possibilities that you could help, gives some tips about how .
I don’t have any idea about mold removal is it safe to do it myself? Still I want to try it for me to save money. I was like looking for asbestos removal in Toronto to do the job. Still i don’t know eventually if how would it cost me or save more money than to do it my self.

  4. Hi Randzy,
Investigate first whether your house materials contains asbestos or not. So you would hire somebody to come out and collect samples of the suspect building materials and have them tested to a certified lab to see whether they contain asbestos or not. if they do, you need to follow certain protective practices in the removal of the product. Call an asbestos consultants like http://www.asbestosremovaldallastx.com/ They seemed to be the experienced, licensed company contractors specializes in asbestos removal.

  5. Homes containing asbestos should have an inspection done to make sure the indoor air quality is safe. It can be hard to find so leaving it to professionals is a good Idea.Click Here For a FREE Estimate Asbestos Removal in Los Angeles

  6. As a restoration contractor I can vouch for these being the correct steps to follow when handling mold. Mold remediation requires special certification and insurance, which is something you need to make sure your contractor has. We need a DIY preventative maintenance portion for homeowners who actively try to keep their homes maintained and mold free.

Flood Pros is putting a DIY preventative maintenance section up on our blog. If you are interested, check us out at www.rockfordwaterdamage.com!

  7. Very interesting article on warm winters and mold growth.
In South Florida we have different conditions that cause mold problems, for example when we have a cold winter spell in Palm Beach County or Broward county lasting a few weeks, ( 50F and 60F is cold for us, ) the local people stop using their AC units. When this occurs the homes have no way of humidity removal because the AC units are all turned off.
As a result indoor humidity from showers and cooking builds up to elevated levels throughout the winter months and becomes trapped indoors. By late winter it is not unusual for people to have indoor humidity levels of around 60% to 70% in the winter time, once again this is because of a lack of AC use and bathroom ventilation fan use in the winter months. This only happens in small rental properties when the AC is turned off because the humidity has no place to go.
In larger homes when the AC is off the humid air is sometimes dissipated by large amounts of dryer indoor air. But when this happens in small properties victims experience severe humidity induced mold problems. Those same properties do not have mold in the summer when the AC is being used all summer long, in the summer, with proper AC use the indoor humidity is more likely to be around 50% more or less and humidity mold does not become a problem unless some other circumstances such as opened windows come into play.

  19. Thanks for the tips! My neighbors left their house empty while they went on vacation for a few months, and their gutters overflowed and made the basement damp. When they came home they had mold inside all of their basement walls-- it was very expensive to fix. I'm trying to keep up on maintenance now!

  20. I didn't know that mold is more common during the winter. It scares me to think that my home may be able to get mold more easily. I have heard of people getting humidifiers, but I didn't know that they could actually help mold to grow. I will have to look into getting a dehumidifier.

  21. You are so right! It sounds like we hear the same advice over and over again, but it's just the truth. The best way to prevent mold is to keep your house clean and dry. If you grow mold accidentally, then it's just best to throw up your hands and call the experts. There's only so much you can do to prevent it, and trying to deal with mold on your own is a hassle and sometimes even dangerous.

  22. Thanks, I've never really thought of something like this. Pretty much every year I get mold issues, it's never really serious, but it's still there. I'll have to be extra careful this year, because I really don't have much money to spare.

  24. First of all, I never knew that mild winter weather brings forth mold growth. You also said that mold spores continue to grow and spread in warmer weather. This worries me because I think I may have spotted a bit of mold in one of my bedrooms. It's actually the playroom for my kids, so how can I tell if it is mold? I honestly don't know what home mold looks like.

  26. One of the things that I've noticed is that mold likes to grow in areas where it is moist and warm, such as the bathroom. There are small bits of mold above where my shower is and I don't know if I should be concerned or not. Do you think it would be a good idea to get someone to come and look at it? http://www.rockymountaininspection.ca/mould_inspection.html

  29. I didn't know that the severity of winter had such an effect of mold growth in homes! This was such an interesting article to find! I guess it makes sense, mold likes the warmth. If it doesn't get cold enough to kill it all, it is going to keep growing. That is something to keep in mind. If the winter is mild, it is worth getting your home checked for mold.
