Don't Let Your Tree be the Grinch That Stole Christmas!

Many common irritants come out to join the festivities during the holidays.  Mold and dust show up as much as relatives.
When you are decking your halls, you are also dusting off the decorations from last year releasing mold and dust into the air. There are various ways to release mold into the air, such as improper storage of cardboard boxes or leaving water in the tree holder.
TIP: A simple remedy to dusty, moldy boxes are reusable plastic tubs!
What’s green and festive and makes you sneeze?  Christmas Trees are for many the first sign of the holiday sneezon, I mean season.
Christmas Tree Syndrome?  It is not as pleasant as it sounds.
So called Christmas Tree Syndrome can cause wheezing, coughing, itchy nose, watery eyes, fatigue and problems sleeping-triggered by breathing in mold spores from the mold growing on Christmas trees.  Mold grows on trees naturally but proliferates once the tree is in your toasty, warm home.
Don’t let your tree become the Grinch that Stole Christmas! Your tree will not necessarily make you sick but there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the spread of mold in your home.
*Check with the nursery where you buy your tree. Some have tree washing services available. If not, clean the tree yourself. Use a garden hose to spray the tree and allow it to dry before bringing it into the house.
*Don’t leave the tree up too long. Some evidence suggests the longer the tree is in the house and the warmer the environment, the more spores are released into the air.
*Use an air purifier in the same room as the tree to help remove allergens.
Using a fake tree can be a solution but won’t necessarily eliminate the problem because artificial trees can also introduce mold and dust into the home if they are stored improperly.
With some simple precautions you can breathe easier this holiday season.
Wishing you a Happy & Healthy Holidays from our home to yours!

No one says it better than one of our customers. We are proud to have this testimonial from Ron & Elaine from Fishers, Indiana:
“If you are like us you know very little about mold. We had a rather difficult job.  Lot of mold suddenly appeared in our basement.  We checked with two removal companies the prices were about the same, and we chose American Mold, basic reason was the sales person, Daryl. I told Daryl when we hired him I trust you guys will do a good job.  We are very happy we made that choice.  The job was difficult because of all the stuff we had in the basement and some of the difficult spots the mold was growing.  To be honest the first time the crew did the job there were many areas that were not done correctly, and when Daryl came out to inspect and test he made it clear he was not satisfied with the job and scheduled another cleaning.  The second cleaning went well, Daryl came out and tested the air again and found there was still a higher than normal level of mold.  He brought out his service manager and they inspected the basement again and found a couple of difficult areas that needed to be cleaned again.  So they came out for a third time and cleaned a couple of areas, after testing again the mold was gone.

Bottom line is Daryl stood behind his word and made the job right, I respect a company that doesn't just take your money and say the job is done, having very little knowledge of mold a lesser company could have easily done just that.  We recommend these guys.”
An American Mold Expert professional will ALWAYS return for post-treatment testing and provide you with a report from an independent environmental lab.  If lab results do not show a significant improvement to industry norms, we will retreat to get the desired results or you will receive a 100% refund.
We guarantee that no visible mold will reoccur in the treated areas for a period of ONE YEAR or we will re-treat at NO CHARGE with our renewal warranty!

Isn't It Obvious?

You may have searched high and low checking your home for mold to discover the cause of the musty smell or allergic symptoms you have been suffering from with no success.

In some cases, indoor mold growth may not be obvious. You may suspect hidden mold if a building smells moldy, but you cannot see the source, or if you know there has been water damage and residents are reporting health problems.

Mold may be hidden in places such as the back side of dry wall, wallpaper, or paneling, the top side of ceiling tiles, the underside of carpets and pads, etc. Other possible locations of hidden mold include areas inside walls around pipes (with leaking or condensing pipes), the surface of walls behind furniture (where condensation forms), inside ductwork, and in roof materials above ceiling tiles (due to roof leaks or insufficient insulation).
Investigating hidden mold can be difficult and requires a professional with experience investigating water- and mold-damage.  Investigating hidden mold requires caution.
It is important not to disturb large areas of mold as they may spread mold throughout your home. For example, removal of wallpaper can lead to a massive release of spores if there is mold growing on the underside of the paper.
Large mold colonies should only be disturbed with proper containment during the remediation process to prevent the spread of mold spores and dangerous mycotoxins throughout your home.
Contact American Mold Experts is you suspect hidden mold growth in your home.  Don’t ignore your suspicions because the presence is not obvious to the naked eye.

Don't Leave Yourself Gasping for Air

When mold rears its ugly head, we usually want to hit it with maximum fire power. But hold on! Those caustic mold removers are as worrisome as the mold itself. Why leave yourself gasping for air when there is natural solution?

It's clear that we need to keep mold from growing in our homes and that prevention is the easiest solution. But when you're stuck with some nasty black fungus it doesn't have to involve caustic chemicals like bleach, formaldehyde, and fungicides to solve the problem. In fact, the EPA has classified 275 different active ingredients found in antimicrobial mold removers as... pesticides! Pretty unsettling, to say the least. The good news is that you can skip those pesticides with our effective way of killing mold without harming yourself or the environment.

“Typical mold treatments are chemical biocides.  Our treatment is a natural organic solution used in our mold removal process.  Our special formulation, MTR94®, isn’t a man-made chemical at all.  It is a naturally occurring organic cleaning solution derived from plants that effectively cleans and removes mold.  You don’t have to use toxic treatments to treat mold effectively. MTR94® is an environmentally-friendly, safe and green cleaner.  The ingredients used pose the least concern to humans and pets.  With our process no hazardous chemicals are released in your home.  MTR94® is guaranteed safe and non-toxic.

Mold & Your Health

Being exposed to mold causes a variety of health problems.  How mold affects the body depends on the situation and the person.  What one person can tolerate with little or no effect may cause symptoms in another individual.
The long-term presence of indoor mold may eventually become unhealthy for anyone. Those with special health concerns should consult a medical doctor if they feel their health is affected by indoor mold. Mold can be especially dangerous for babies and children, elderly persons, individuals with chronic respiratory conditions or allergies or asthma and persons having weakened immune systems.
There are four kinds of health problems that come from exposure to mold: allergic illness, irritant effects, infection, and toxic effects. For people that are sensitive to molds, symptoms such as nasal and sinus irritation or congestion, dry hacking cough, wheezing, skin rashes or burning, watery or reddened eyes may occur.
People with severe allergies to molds may have more serious reactions, such as hay-fever-like symptoms or shortness of breath. People with chronic illnesses or people with immune system problems may be more likely to get infections from certain molds, viruses and bacteria.
Headaches, memory problems, mood swings, nosebleeds and body aches and pains are sometimes reported in mold complaints, but the causes of these physical symptoms are not yet understood.  Allergic disease is now considered the most likely health problem related to mold exposures. Research into the possible health effects related to mold exposure continues today.
Short-term and beginning stages of mold sickness can look like a basic cold or allergy attack. This is because mold acts as an irritant in small doses. If you repeatedly receive any of these symptoms after entering a building, that building may have a mold problem. Early symptoms include sneezing, itchy skin, headache, watery and itching eyes and skin irritation.

If you are in an area that has been contaminated by mold for a long period of time, the following will develop.  If you begin to get these symptoms, see your doctor immediately, as they may indicate prolonged exposure to mold. Symptom of the later stages of mold sickness include constant headaches, weight and hair loss, diarrhea, vomiting, constant fatigue, coughing up blood, chronic bronchitis and sinus infections, sexual dysfunction, short-term memory loss, skin rashes and sores.

Staying in a mold-infested environment for a long period of time can result in these symptoms, which are often the result of not seeing a doctor in time, or choosing to remain in an area with mold, without taking steps to clean it.

If you already have a mold problem-ACT QUICKLY!

Mold damages what it grows on.  The longer it grows, the more damage it causes.
It can happen very quickly. You need to fix it right away or you could be
encouraging mold. It only takes 24 to 48 hours for those spores to start
growing.
Mold grows solely by virtue of moisture. Mold spores are everywhere, they just
need water and something to feed on — like, for example building materials.
Once mold is visible the spore count is already in the millions. That means it’s
all but certain that professional services are required.
American Mold Experts can help you determine the level of mold in residential
and commercial properties and help you determine the cause. A thorough inspection is done and test results are available in as little as 24
hours!
Once the saturation level and type of mold is determined, remediation is done to seek out, clean and remove mold.
We use MTR94 ®, a 100% natural and organic solution that is so effective it is
usually not necessary to tear out and replace areas infected with mold.  This is
safer, faster and less expensive than other commonly used mold remediation
services.  Typical treatments use hazardous man-made chemicals and biocides and require tearing out and replacing infected areas.

How to Limit Mold Growth

The most practical approach to limit mold growth is early detection and prompt resolution of excessive moisture. If you can see mold or detect an earthy or musty odor, you can assume you have a moisture problem that must be resolved to achieve a permanent solution to arresting mold growth. Mold growth is found behind walls or under materials where water has damaged surfaces. Look for discoloration and mold on surfaces.

Controlling indoor air moisture will limit the probability of supporting mold growth from condensing water on interior surfaces; such as on walls, windows, and areas near air conditioning supply registers. Relative humidity is a measure of the amount of water vapor in air. Relative humidity meters are useful for detecting excessive moisture and they are available from most hardware stores. Moisture sources that increase indoor air relative humidity are: habitation (people release moisture), bathing, cooking, plants, washing and air-drying of dishes and clothes, unvented combustion appliances, humidifiers, and outdoor ventilation air in humid climates.

Another moisture source is water from leaks; such as from pipes, rain water leakage through windows, roof flashing, ice dams, etc.

Strategies that can help minimize mold growth:
  • Take notice of musty odors in the home because they indicate the presence of mold. Look for visible signs of mold and abate the moisture source.
  • Watch for condensation and wet spots and eliminate sources of moisture.
  • Prevent moisture resulting from condensation by increasing surface temperatures or reducing moisture levels in the air. To increase the surface temperature, insulate or increase the circulation of heated air. To reduce moisture levels in the air, repair leaks, increase ventilation (if outside air is cold and dry), or dehumidify.
  • Perform building and HVAC inspections and maintenance. Repair the condensate drain if the air conditioning system's drip pan overflows with water.
  • Vent clothes dryers to the outdoors.
  • Run the air conditioner and/or a dehumidifier during the humid months of the year. Controlling indoor air moisture to below 65 percent relative humidity will limit the probability of supporting mold growth.
  • Keep the relative humidity as low as is comfortable during the winter season for houses in cold climates. Mold growth on interior surfaces of exterior walls can occur during the heating season. The combination of cool surfaces and excessive humidity can cause a high near-surface relative humidity and condensation. Experience has shown that an air moisture level below 40 percent relative humidity during the heating season will prevent condensation on surfaces. This level of humidity may not be appropriate for houses in severe cold climates. A sign of excessive humidity is condensation on the inside of windows. If condensation is present for prolonged periods take steps to reduce the moisture source or increase ventilation.
  • Clean and dry any wet or damp areas within 48 hours.
  • Provide drainage for roof rainwater and maintain the ground with a slope that drains water away from the foundation.
  • Repair water leaks in the building envelope as soon as possible.
  • Do not store organic materials such as paper, books, clothes, etc., in humid locations (such as in unconditioned basements).
  • Exercise extra care when cleaning up after water damage from flood and sewer water.
  • Consider the use of dehumidifiers in areas such as unconditioned basements

Don't Look the Other Way When You Suspect Mold

Are you looking the other way when you see a moldy substance growing in the dark and damp areas of your home?  You shouldn't be if that substance is greenish-black.  It's known as Strachybortrys atra and it's very toxic and deadly.  That's why when you're dealing with molds; you need to know all the facts.  And when you're dealing with black mold removal you need to be very aware of this dangerous fungus and you need to know how to stop it dead in its track, now.

To understand what Strachybotrys atra can do to someone, you need to be aware of the symptoms it can cause.  A person who has been exposed may have difficulty breathing; they may experience headaches, coughing, nausea, memory loss, dizziness, asthma, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and even infertility.

They symptoms can be very scary.  Many people refuse to believe that they even have this nasy substance in their home.  They belive that if they keep their hous spic and span clean, they will never encounter this dangerous fungus.  Unfortunately, that just isn't true!  Even the cleanest home can create the perfect place for fungus to grown.

For instance, when you live in an area that has a lot of humidity, you're definitely prone to toxic fungi.  Since moisture causes molds to become more suscpetible to the area, the risk of having Strachybotrys atra in your home is even greater to homes that are not in a high humidity area.

However, humidity in the environment isn't the only factor that can create a breeding ground for Strachybotrys atra.  Leaky pipes can also become a potential toxic hazard for the fungus.  And often, those leaky pipes go unnoticed because the leak is so small.  To make matters worse, the fungus isn't always visible
since it can attach itself to the insides of the pipes, which makes it virtually impossible for removing black mold.

Another common breeding ground for Strachybotrys atra is anywhere a flood has occured.  It makes no difference if it's a major flood that happened during a rainstorm or a minor flood that occured when the toilet overflowed, it's all breeding ground for fungi.  Yet the worse part is it can take several days to dry that area out which gives the dangerous fungi an even better chance to grown.

Some other good indications that you have a problem with fungus growth are stains on the walls or ceilings of the home.  These stains are usually yellowish in color, but signs of black, green or brown can indicate a fungi problem.

Another sign that could mean your home has the deadly fungus is, odor.  If the smell of mildew or must is present, it could mean that there are molds growing where the odors are lingering.  Common areas may include closets and heating and air conditioning units.

Finding our where the problem lies is only the tip of the iceberg.  The next step is to remove the dangerous fungi.  While this may seem like an easy task, it actually requires careful handling when coming in contact with the substance.

Given the dangers of black mold, a professional is needed rather than trying to remove black mold yourself.  American Mold Experts uses a naturally-occurring,organic plant components that simply cleans and removes mold, including black mold, safely and effectively.

The Mold Myth

A myth exists concerning the use and “effectiveness” of chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite) in the remediation of a mold problem. Mold remediation involves the removal and or clean up and restoration of mold contaminated building materials.
Chlorine bleach, commonly referred to as laundry bleach, is generally perceived to be an “accepted and answer-all” biocide to abate mold in the remediation processes. Well-intentioned recommendations of health departments and other state and local agencies are perpetuating that belief. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) who once recommended using chlorine bleach for mold abatement was the first federal agency to stop recommending the use of liquid bleach in mold remediation. Subsequently, The Environmental Protection Agency  wrote-out/edited their A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home (EPA 402-k-02-003) to exclude their once recommended use of  bleach as a mold clean-up agent
Why Chlorine is NOT recommended for mold remediation
Chlorine bleach is corrosive and that fact is stated on the product label (not to mention the exposure hazards of dioxins). Yet the properties of chlorine bleach prevent it from “soaking into” wood-based building materials to get at the deeply embedded mycelia (roots) of mold. The object to killing mold is to kill its “roots”.
Reputable mold remediation contractors use appropriate products that effectively disinfect properly scrubbed and cleaned salvageable mold infected wood products.
Beware of any mold inspector, mold remediation contractor or other individual that recommends or uses chlorine bleach for mold clean up on wood-based building materials.
Mold Facts:
* Mold usually returns in less than 24 hours after using bleach.
* Cleaning stirs up mold spores and puts them into the air, creating more mold related health problems and allergic reactions.
* Bleach only treats the surface. It does not kill or eliminate airborne mold spores.
* Bleach is 3-6% Sodium Hypochlorite and 94% to 97% water. The Sodium Hypochlorite evaporates, leaving water behind to foster the growth of more mold.
* Bleach is ineffective and not recommended for use on porous surfaces such as concrete, wood, wallpaper, sheetrock, grout, books, clothing,
* Chlorine Gas, released by mixing bleach with any acid, may be lethal.
* When inhaled during application, chlorine particles may cause lung and bronchial irritation, as well as headaches.
* Chlorine particles, according to some reports, may bio-accumulate in the Thyroid leading to reduced thyroid function and possibly thyroid cancer.

Mold in Schools: What you Need to Know at Back to School Time

Schools across the nation have become increasingly concerned about mold exposure in their facilities.  Studies have shown an association between mold and a variety of adverse health effects.  Mold problems are not limited to humid states and have led to various school closings across the country.  Addressing mold problems proactively is the most successful and cost-effective way to manage them.

News headlines indicate that schools across the country experience a wide range of indoor air problems; some problems even lead to school evacuations and emergency renovations.  The U.S. schools have problems linked to poor indoor air quality.  With nearly 56 million people, or 20 percent of the U.S. population, spending their days inside elementary and secondary schools, indoor air quality problems in schools are a significant concern.

If you suspect mold in your child's school pediatricians and allergists urge parents not to panic.  Instead, they said, parents should be asking questions about where the mold is located, how it got there and what school officials are doing to get rid of it.

Q. How do I know if my child is getting sick at school from mold?

A. Some children are more sensitive that others.  But watch out for symptoms that seem to appear only at school - for example, wheezing, hoarseness, cough, runny nose, acid reflux, digestive issues, headache and irritated eyes.

Q. What can parents look for?

A.  Visit your children's classrooms and other parts of their schools.  Do you smell mold or mildew? Are there signs of water leaks on walls, around windows or on the ceiling?  Just because you smell an earthy or musty odor at school doesn't mean there's mold.  But it often means there's at least an indoor air-quality problem.  Dirty carpet and water damage might also mean mold and bad air quality.  Mold grows where there's moisture.

Q. How do you know if it's mold?

A. If you see fuzzy, slimy or discolored surfaces - especially in damp or wet areas - it's probably mold.  Molds can be green, black, gray, purple or even orange.

Q. What if I see a problem?

A. Alert your principal or School Board member.  A lot of times, it will take more than one call or e-mail to get a response.  Although calls might be quicker, your letters will provide a paper trail.  Also, be sure to log your calls, letters and observations.  Inform other parents of the problem.

Q. How can I protect my child?

A. Educate yourself.  Talk to school officials about what they're doing to control humidity and how quickly they're fixing leaky roofs and windows.  Ask to see copies of investigative reports and work orders for repairs and mold removal.  This website contains a wealth of information that can help you and your child.  Teach your children about the health symptoms they may experience around mold so they can alert someone if there's a problem.

Research and talk to your doctor about Section 504 of the federal Rehabilitation Act or Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA).  If your children have serious reactions to air quality, you can request an "accommodation" for their environmental health needs such as a transfer to another classroom.

Finally a Green Solution!!!

Traditional mold remediation methods are time-consuming, expensive and very unhealthy. Traditional methods often exacerbate the problem. With the disruption of mold-contaminated materials, 10 to 1000 times more spores can be released spreading the mold to new locations. With these methods, walls must often be torn down and carpet must be removed with no guarantee that the mold will be found and removed. Worst of all, man-made disinfecting chemicals and biocides can be even more toxic than the mold itself. Chemical residue remains after the mold is removed.

At American Mold Experts, we use a 100% natural and organic solution that very simply cleans and removes the mold. It is so effective that it is usually NOT necessary to tear down walls or remove carpeting. Instead of a dangerous chemical residue, only a fresh scent remains after the mold has been removed. MTR94 is a breakthrough technology in mold remediation which makes other methods obsolete. Our natural treatment solution, MTR94 is safe, nontoxic and is derived from natural plant sources. This solution is so safe the OSHA declared the product is safe for humans and pets. MTR94 cleans and removes mold, including toxic black mold within 24 hours. Our method is safer, faster and less expensive than any other mold remediation service available today. American Mold Experts are Green Business certified and the ONLY mold remediation company that can use MTR94 in the Midwest.

Removing mold can be successfully done with the use of organic and environment friendly products. Why use toxic chemical when you can use a natural and organic solution without the harmful effects to health, environment and surface materials. Since organic mold removal products are made from natural ingredients, there won't be any harmful wastes after they are used. You not only clean out molds, you also protect the environment.

Visit www.americanmoldexperts.com to learn more about this safe, effective mold remediation with assurance ALL mold will be removed and NOT return.
